Attention! Help preserve the Legacy of our Forefathers!

Your Union is involved with an ambitious undertaking called the Labor Review Archive Project (LRAP) and is seeking assistance for the LRAP!

Many of you have read the monthly issue of the “Labor Review” published by the Minneapolis Central Labor Union Council (CLUC). Because our local is affiliated with the CLUC we receive these free of charge. The Labor Review was originally created to inform Union Members about the local labor movement and to accurately portray the labor side of issues and Union strife.

This storied Union publication will be 100 years old in three years. To capture all this labor history and make it easily accessible to the public the Labor Review Archive Project was begun. Our very own Bill Usher, a member of the Minneapolis Area Local’s Legislative Committee, has also volunteered his time and is a member of the Central Council’s Labor Review Archive Committee. Bill, along with the other members of the LRAP is going to digitally archive every page (over 20,000 pages) of every volume which can then be saved in a digital format for preservation and future reference! Those who wish to look back in history will then be able to look up articles in the past issues by title or subject by going to the CLUC web site (www.minneapolisunions.org) or researching their subject in hard copy! As an example, anyone interested could look up articles about the Great Postal Strike of 1970!

The Archive Committee will be hosting a reception to encourage Education and Library officials to use this new tool in their subject matter so a new generation of Americans can grow up knowing some of what would otherwise become forgotten history! Our forefathers gave their sweat, toil, and sometimes their very lives in order to make our living conditions better. We want to preserve the accounts of what they went through!

We want to get some of our members involved in this fascinating project. The week of April 26 through April 30 we are going to be photographing the first 50 years of the Review. We need volunteers to help with the actual photography. We will be running 4 three hour shifts and only need two helpers per shift. The shifts will be 9 to noon, noon to 3 pm, 3 to 6pm and 6 to 9pm. If you are interested and can make any of these times for helping you will be trained to do the photographing or be a page turner and also will receive a T-shirt with the Original April 6, 1903 issue printed on the front. Please be a part of this priceless project. If you want to be involved call your union office at 612-623-0677, and let them know you are interested in helping on the labor review archive project and leave you number and we will contact you to see when you would be available to help and give you directions to the Labor Temple where this is taking place!
