Information contained in these bulletins is intended for APWU members. Member questions and/or comments regarding any flash bulletin content are always encouraged. Reading of publications prepared for and financed by dues paying members by those who do not is yet one more example of non-members accepting benefits that have been paid for by others!

2nd Annual Chad Judge Memorial Fishing for Scholarship Tournament.
Saturday, August 26, 2006

The Big Lake Area Jaycees are sponsoring this event on behalf of Chad Judge!  Chad drowned in Lake Mitchell on July 27, 2004 while fishing and was the son of Minneapolis P&DC CFS employee Sheila Judge. Chad’s love for school, sports and life will be remembered by this tournament.  Proceeds will go toward scholarships to be given to Chad’s Classmates; most of the money raised will go toward scholarships to be given to the Big lake Class of 2007.  Remaining money will be used to help continue the event into coming years in Chad’s name and for the benefit of Big Lake graduating classes.

This year’s tournament will be held on Saturday, August 26, 2006.  Entries will be limited to 30 boats with a limit of 2 people per boat.  Entrance fee is $135 per boat.  The tournament will start at 7:00 AM with a lunch and silent auction taking place between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM.  There are many great prizes ranging from $1000 for first place, to $450 for third place!

Educational Opportunities for Members, Stewards, and Officers!

Did you know that you can be reimbursed by the Minneapolis Area Local for training taken through the University of Minnesota Labor Education Service and other labor oriented educational services?  All courses must be pre-approved by the local President and, provided they are authorized, reimbursement would require a photocopy of the completion certificate and an original receipt.     Want to brush up on those computer skills, take continuing education classes, etc.?  Tell us how your participation in a class can help benefit the local and the expense of your taking the class may be on us!

APWU NATIONAL CONVENTION & CONTRACT NEGOTIATIONS!

The Minneapolis Area Local will be attending the 2006 National Convention in Philadelphia, PA, August 11 – 18, 2006.  This is where all the resolutions from around the country come together for discussion and possible adoption by the delegates.  Many negotiation items for our National Contract will be debated along with other issues that help give our organization the direction we want our negotiators to take during our upcoming contract negotiations!

Our current Collective Bargaining Agreement expires November 20, 2006.  We expect our contract negotiation will commence on or about the end of August 2006.  Your local delegation to the convention will be:  Peggy Whitney, Mark Pietsch, Dan Kranz, Gary Earl Lofgren, Kevin Meyer, Dave Gangl, Jim Miller, Ifeoma Njaka, Sandy Shanks, Rick Grata, Kathy Walker, Liz Culver, Kip Narbo, Abey Abram, Mel Thompson, James Allen, Moe Griffin, David Anderson, Carrie (Spensley) Hlivka of the Auxiliary, and Jerry Sirois.

Many negotiation suggestions our members have provided are resolutions that will be discussed at the National Convention and we will pursue the advancement of all issues we understand to be of priority importance to our membership.

The last raise provided for as a result of our present agreement will be a Cost of Living Adjustment in September and is projected to net a $728 dollar a year increase raising hourly pay by 35 cents.

ONE WALK, 20 MILLION REASONS
AMERICA’S WALK FOR DIABETES
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 30
A GREAT TIME FOR A GREAT CAUSE

It’s time to make plans to participate in the American Diabetes Association’s Walk for Diabetes 2006.  The Minneapolis Area Local will again sponsor a team.  This year the walk will be held on Saturday, September 30 at the General Mills Headquarters in Golden Valley.  There will be Free Parking.    Registration will start at 8:00 AM with the walk beginning at 9:00 AM.

Each Minneapolis APWU participant will receive an APWU cap and is invited to a pizza party after the walk.  You will also be eligible to win prizes.

To join in, all you have to do is call Team Captain Marilyn Miller at (612) 349-4971 and request a registration form.  If you reach her voice mail, please leave your name, address, phone number and the hours when it is best to call you.  When you receive the form, fill it out and send it in.  Then start soliciting donations from your family, friends, and co-workers.

For those of you have already registered directly with the American Diabetes Association, please call Marilyn at the above number and let her know you will be part of the team.

This is the tenth year in a row that the Minneapolis Area Local has sponsored a team of walkers.  Each year we have increased the number of participants and the amount of money collected.  We would like to continue that tradition this year.

Please join us in the enjoyable event -- our participants have a really great time.
