Information contained in these bulletins is intended for APWU members. Member questions and/or comments regarding any flash bulletin content are always encouraged. Reading of publications prepared for and financed by dues paying members by those who do not is yet one more example of non-members accepting benefits that have been paid for by others!

Veteran’s Day Holiday Saturday, November 11, 2006!
Swami Sez…

Article 11.5 of our collective bargaining agreement “Holiday on non-work day” provides: “When a holiday falls on Sunday, the following Monday will be observed as the holiday.   When a holiday falls on Saturday, the preceding Friday shall be observed as the holiday.”

Our contract swami offers the following statement: Saturday and Sunday holidays may traditionally pose a conundrum in holiday scheduling.  The language above always applies UNLESS one of your scheduled work days falls on the actual holiday!  In the case of this Veteran’s Day that means if you are normally scheduled to work on Saturday…Your holiday is on Saturday…not Friday!  Swami concludes with this observation:  Many things remain a mystery and require Swami’s intervention – but this much is no mystery - Columbus may have discovered America, but it is you who keeps us free! THANK YOU VETS!

2006 COPA Club Thermometer Exceeds the $10,000 Level -
Six More $100 Winners Are Drawn!

Right on the heels of exceeding the $8000 level and our September 15, 2006, drawing for six winners… the 2006 COPA express has reached another $2000.00 benchmark and thus delivered another six $100.00 winners!

We have now exceeded $10,000 in contributions and on September 28, 2006, we drew the names of six more people from our list of contributors.  CONGRATULATIONS TO:  Bill Brunelle (Mpls Clerk) Deb Lindquist (TCMH Clerk) John Fritze (Mpls Clerk) Mike Solem (Retired) and Coreen Straiton (BMC Maint). Your checks are on their way!

Obviously our COPA appreciation event that took place on September 16th has reinvigorated our efforts to reach our annual $20,000 goal.  We fully expect to surpass the $12,000 level in the immediate future and once again have the pleasure of handing six new winners $100 each!  Our local is committed to this for the long haul because we see long haul threats to our continued right to decent jobs!  We will be discussing continuing and expanding this exciting and fun event for future years……YOU can ensure your inclusion by donating as little as $1 per pay period through Postal Ease or EFT!  Cash and checks are also welcome; however, long haul participation will be greatly facilitated by Postal ease and/or EFT donations!

Along with going toward protecting your employment, contributing a minimal amount to APWU COPA entitles you to belong to our Minneapolis Area Local COPA Club and all the benefits we will be making COPA Club members eligible for!  Read anyone of our posted COPA Thermometers for details or call 612-623-0677 with any questions you may have!  Don’t delay, get on the COPA express now and you too will be eligible for cash prizes!  Got new ideas for us?  We are always interested in getting input from our members!

Reminder! 2006 Annual Leave Carryover

All members are reminded that the 2006 leave year ends on January 5, 2007.  The 2007 leave year begins on January 6, 2007.  The maximum amount of annual leave that can be carried over for Bargaining Unit Employees is 440 hours.

Annual leave earned or accumulated in the 2006 leave year in excess of 440 hours will be lost if not used before January 5, 2007!

Re: Annual Leave Exchange Option

Remember…..If you are one of the people who has enough annual leave left at the end of each leave year to be eligible for the Annual Leave Exchange Option – Two key points are:

  • In order to sell back annual you must have at least 440 hours from the preceding leave year.  Not 439.99 but 440.  You may have more than 440 but will lose all over 440.
  • You must have used less than 75 hours of sick leave in the year preceding.

If you are eligible for this option we urge you to see your Steward should you have any questions.  Remember, ANNUAL LEAVE is hard to earn….and easy to lose!
