Flash Bulletins are paid for by members of the APWU. Information contained in these bulletins is intended for APWU members. Member questions and/or comments regarding any flash bulletin content are always encouraged. Reading of publications prepared for and financed by dues paying members by those who do not is yet one more example of non-members accepting benefits that have been paid for by others!

Earl W. Miller (1919 – 2007)

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of former Minneapolis Area Local President, Earl W. Miller.  Earl passed away on Friday, January 26, 2007.  In addition to being local President form 1972-1978 Earl held many positions within the local.  After retiring from the USPS in 1978 Earl remained heavily involved in the Minneapolis Central labor Union Council and the Minnesota AFL-CIO where he was a delegate and officer.

Through these venues Earl continued working behind the scenes for the benefit of all Postal Workers.  Earl’s influence continued to be a driving force in guiding and developing many of the policies of the Minneapolis Area Local up to the time of his death.

Earl will be sorely missed but never forgotten as lessons learned due to his mentoring will continue to be applied on behalf of the local he loved.  More details about Earl will be published in our March edition of the Northern Light.  We will be searching for an appropriate way to ensure that a man who meant so much to our APWU family will be long remembered and his name cemented into the fabric that makes up the Minneapolis Area Local APWU.

Earl’s Wake will be Thursday, February 1 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Estes Funeral Chapel, 2210 Plymouth Avenue N, Minneapolis, MN.  The phone number is 612 521-6744.

The services will be Friday at the Shiloh Temple, 1201 W. Broadway, Minneapolis, MN.  The time for the service have yet to be determined.  Call 612-623-0677 for more details.

$734,000.00 Casual in Lieu of Settlement Update #2

We have been notified that the data turned in to management on November 17, 2006, was submitted and in the possession of the Postal Data Center effective Friday, January 26, 2007.  Unless there are any additional set backs we are confidant that those who will receive payments (Clerks within the Minneapolis Installation and its facilities) as of a result of these staffing infractions will see those reflected on one of their next two checks.

Non-Members - As stated in an earlier edition of the flash we will still be monitoring the non-members who receive money form this settlement.  It is time that all non-members do the right thing and belong to the only organization that fights for their work place benefits!  As stated in the earlier flash, those who do not belong because it would cause a conflict in their “beliefs” will certainly want to give their proceeds back to the local so we can donate it to worthwhile and needy charities within the community.  It will be reported on a future flash.  There are approximately 170 non-members who will receive money as a result of the Union uncovering and pursuing managerial staffing violations.
